The mucosa of small intestine is raised into numerous microscopic vascular projections called villi. The free surfaces of the cells covering the' villi bear innumerable brush border or microvilli, hence also known as brush border epithelium. The villi and microvilli ~ greatly increase the absorptive surface.Total increase in-surface area is 600 times.
