Q. The brown coloured gas is prepared by the action of concentrated nitric acid on copper is an equilibrium mixture of dinitrogen tetraoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

$\mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{O}_4(\mathrm{~g}) \rightleftharpoons 2 \mathrm{NO}_2(\mathrm{~g})$

Which one of the following changes would result in a darkening of the colour?

Solution:

$N_{2}O_{4}\left(\right.g\left.\right)\rightleftharpoons2NO_{2}\left(\right.g\left.\right)$

Here brown colour is formed due to $NO_{2}$ gas. Darkening of colour is possible when more $NO_{2}$ is formed when temperature is increased the equilibrium shifted to the right side as it is an endothermic process.
