Q. The boiling point of phenols are higher than the hydrocarbons of comparable masses due to:

Bihar CECEBihar CECE 2002Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

Hydrogen bonds are strong forces of attraction existing among molecules having O or N or F with H. They are as stronger as compared to van der Waals forces of attraction Phenols have hydrogen bonding between molecules which is stronger than van der Waals forces of attraction exisiting between molecules of hydrocarbons. So the phenols have higher boiling points than hydrocarbons.
