Q. The boiling point of mercury is $ 367^{\circ} C $ . A mercury thermometer can be used to measure a temperature of $ 500^{\circ} C $

AMUAMU 2003

Solution:

In order to increase the boiling point, high pressure must be required. Hence, temperature can be raised to $ 500^{\circ}C $ from $ 367^{\circ}C $ by filling the space above mercury with nitrogen at high pressure.
