AMUAMU 2005

Solution:

In cities with many industries and automobile traffic, the atmosphere is polluted by the smoke. The main components of smoke are unsaturated hydrocarbon, $NO$ and some sulphur compounds. Hydrocarbon and other organic compounds are oxidised through a chemical and photochemical reaction. As a result many secondary pollutant products and intermediate are produced which belong to the category of photochemical smog. Peroxya-cylnitrate (PAN), peroxybenzoyl nitrate (PBN), nitrogen dioxide $ (NO_{2}) $ , hydrogen peroxide etc. are the components of smog. Photo- chemical smog is an oxidising smog having high concentration of oxidant.
$ NO+O_{3}\xrightarrow{hv}NO_{2}+O_{2} $
