Normal inspiration is an active process which involves contraction of diaphragm and external intercostal muscles, which increases the volume of thoracic volume and this pulmonary volume and therefore decreases pulmonary pressure. The ability to increase the strength of inspiration and expiration can be performed with the help of additional muscles in the abdomen and internal intercostal muscles.
