Q. The 'fire' algae responsible for red tides are the red dinoflagellates, which are ____

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020

Solution:

Most of the dinoflagellates are marine and are often dense among the plankton, but some occur in freshwater. Some dinoflagellates are glowing and contribute to the twinkling or flashing effects that are sometimes seen in the sea at night, particularly in the tropics. Some dinoflagellates increase in large numbers and cause a red tide of the sea, e.g., Gonyaulax and Gymnodinium.
