The epidermis of adult Ascaris has no separate cells. It is continuous layer of cytoplasm with scattered nuclei i.e., a syncytial or coenocytic layer. The epidermis of earthworm is an epithelium of tall, columnar cells (supporting cells, glandular cells, basal cells, sensory cells). The skin (body layer) of star-fish has a mesodermal endoskeleton of separate dermal ossicles in the form of spines, tubercles, rods, cones or plates.
