Q. Strongest acid among the following is

AIIMSAIIMS 2001Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Fluorine is a highly electronegative element, it withdraws electron from the neighbouring atoms. Therefore, more is the number of fluorine atoms attached, greater will be the acidity of the molecules. e.g. $FCH _{2} COOH$ is more acidic than $CH _{3} COOH$. Therefore, correct order of acidity is :

$CF _{3} COOH > CF _{2} HCOOH > FCH _{2} COOH > CH _{3} COOH$
