Q. Statement I: The fungi had chitin in their walls while the green plants had a cellulosic cell wall.
Statement II: Whittaker’s system did not distinguish between autotrophic / photosynthetic (green algae and plants) and the heterotrophic / non-photosynthetic organisms (fungi).

Biological Classification

Solution:

Whittaker’s system considered mode of nutrition as one of the criteria for its classification and hence placed the autotrophic/photosynthetic (green algae and plants) and the heterotrophic/non-photosynthetic organisms (fungi) under separate kingdoms as Plantae and Fungi respectively. However, some of the green algae such as Chlorella and Chalmydomonas are placed under kingdom Protista.
