Q. Standard reduction potentials of some species $P$, $Q , R , S , T , U , W$ are $-2.90\, V ,+0.34\, V, +1.20\, V ,-0.76\, V ,-1.35\, V ,+0.11\, V ,-0.40\, V$, respectively. How many of these can oxidize hydrogen gas?

Electrochemistry

Solution:

The standard reduction potential of hydrogen electrode is zero. Hence, any species having electrode potential greater than zero can oxidize hydrogen gas. Thus, $Q, R$ and $U$ can oxidize hydrogen gas.
