Q. Spirometer is useful in assessment of all the following pulmonary functions except

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

Spirometer is an instrument used to measure lung volumes. It can measure tidal volume (TV), inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) and expiratory reserve volume (ERV). It cannot measure residual volume (RV) which is the volume of air remaining in the lungs even after a forcible expiration. Inspiratory capacity is the sum of IRV and TV. Expiratory capacity is the sum of TV and ERV. Vital capacity is the sum of TV, ERV and IRV. These three capacities can be measured using spirometer as they involve TV, IRV and ERV. Functional residual capacity (FRC) is the sum of ERV and RV. Since Residual capacity cannot be measured by spirometer, FRC cannot be calculated using spirometer.
