$\underset{\text{ White phosphorus (A) }}{P_{4(s)} }+ 3NaOH_{(aq)} + 3H_2O_{(l)}\rightarrow \underset{\text{ Phosphine (B) }}{PH_{3(g)} + 3NaH_2PO_{2(aq)}} $
Phosphine has unpleasant 'odour like that of garlic or rotten fish. It bums in air to give clouds of $P_4O_{10}$ which act as smoke screens.
