Q. Sodium on heating with moist air produces

The s-Block Elements

Solution:

When sodium is heated with moist air, the ultimate product obtained is $Na _{2} CO _{3}$. In moist air, a layer of sodium oxide, hydroxide and carbonate is formed on its surface due to which, it loses its lustre.
The complete reaction sequence is as follows:
$4 Na + O _{2} \rightarrow 2 Na _{2} O \xrightarrow{2 H _{2} O} 4 NaOH \xrightarrow{2 CO _{2}} 2 Na _{2} CO _{3}+2 H _{2} O$
