Q.
Significance of meiosis lies in
AMUAMU 2004
Solution:
Meiosis is complicated cell division, which occurs in reproductive cells of sexually reproductive organism and reduces the number of chromosome to half. It was worked out by Strasburger in 1888 and the term was coined by Farmer and Moore (1905).
Significances of meiosis
(i) Reduction of chromosome number to half.
(ii) It restore the original number of chromosomes in an individual.
(iii) It provides an oppurtunity to produce variations in the individual as a result of crossing over and the variations are the root cause of evolution.
(iv) Failure of meiosis leads to the formation of diploid gametes, which on fusion form polyploids.
