Q. Sickle cell anaemia is caused by the substitution of Glu by ________ at the sixth position of the beta-globin chain of the haemoglobin molecule.

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

Sickle cell anaemia is an example of point mutation in which base substitution occurs in beta chain of haemoglobin. At sixth position amino acid is glutamic acid specified by codon GAG, mutation results in change in codon to GUG which specifies amino acid Valine.
