Q. Serpeck's method involves the heating of bauxite with

General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

Solution:

In Serpeck's method white bauxite is heated with coke in presence of $N _{2}$ gas.
$ Al _{2} O _{3}+ N _{2}+3 C \xrightarrow{\Delta} 3 CO +2 AlN$
$ AlN +3 H _{2} O \longrightarrow NH _{3}+2 Al ( OH )_{3}$
Aluminium nitride formed in $1^{\text {st }}$ step is reacted with water to produce $Al ( OH )_{3}$ which gives $Al _{2} O _{3}$ on ignition.
