Q. Select the statement that is correct related to movement of diaphragm and intercostal muscles for the process of effortless exhalation.

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

The process of effortless exhalation is a passive process which involves the relaxation of the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles. This pushes the ribcage downwards and inwards reducing the volume. Thus, the intrapulmonary pressure increases forcing the air to move out of the lungs. Forceful exhalation, on the other hand, is an active process which involves contraction of internal intercostal muscles.
