Solution:

If $T_1$, $T_2$, $T_3$ are the tensions in the strings in the three cases, we have
$T_{1}=\frac{2m_{1}m_{2}g}{m_{1}+m_{2}}=\frac{2\times2\times2g}{\left(2+2\right)}=2g$
$T_{2}=\frac{2\times3\times2g}{\left(3+2\right)}=2.4g$
$T_{3}=\frac{2\times1\times2g}{\left(1+2\right)}=1.33g$
As x $\propto$ T and $T_{2}>T_{1}>T_{3}$
$\therefore \quad x_{2}>x_{1}>x_{3}$
