In the famous $\alpha$-ray scattering experiment, Rutherford bombarded, a thin foil of gold (Au) with $\alpha$-particles and found that most of the $\alpha$-particles passed undeflected and a few returned back. By this experiment, he found that in centre every atom contains a nucleus.
