Red mangroves, which can survive in the most inundated areas, prop themselves above the water level with the help of stilt roots and can then absorb air (oxygen) through the lenticels present in the stilt roots. Stilt roots arise from the stem or stem branches and grow towards the soil where they develop an underground root system.
