Q. Rhizobium forms symbiotic association with roots in legumes and fixes atmospheric nitrogen. Which one of the following statement is correct about this process?

KVPYKVPY 2019

Solution:

Rhizobium is a Gram negative bacteria fixes atmosphoric nitrogen by infecting roots of leguminous plants and leads to the formation of root nodules. Nitrogen fixation is catalysed by enzyme nitrogenase.
Nitrogenase is very sensitive to oxygen. If oxygen is present, nitrogenase is not able to perform its function.
Leg haemoglobin scavanges $O_{2}$ if present for proper functioning of enzyme. It is a ATP dependent process and required anaerobic condition.
