Respiratory Quotient $(RQ)$ is the ratio of volume of $CO_{2}$ released to volume of $O_{2}$ absorbed. $RQ$ varies for substrates. $RQ$ is, one in case of carbohydrates, while for fatty acids, nucleic acids and organic acids $RQ$ is less than one.
