The natural reservoir of phosphorus is rock and fossil bone deposits laid down in the past geological ages, which contains phosphorus in the form of phosphates. Weathering of rocks leads to the dissolution of minute amounts of these phosphates in soil solutions, which is absorbed by the roots of the plants. Herbivores and other animals obtain this element through the consumption of plants. Phosphate-solubilising bacteria degrade and decompose the waste products and dead organisms, releasing phosphorus that becomes available for re-utilisation by plants.
