Q. Read the given statements and select the correct option.
Statement 1 : About $70\%$ of $CO_2$ that enters $RBCs$ changes into $HCO^-_3$ for transport in plasma to the lungs where it reconverts into $CO_2$ for elimination.
Statement 2 : About $40\%$ of $CO_2$ that enters $RBCs$ changes into carbaminohaemoglobin which releases $O_2$ in the lungs.

Breathing and Exchange of Gases

Solution:

About $20-25\%$ of $CO_2$ is carried by $Hb$ as carbamino-haemoglobin. $CO_2$ reacts directly with amine radicals $(NH_2)$ of $Hb$ to form an unstable compound called carbaminohaemoglobin which releases $CO_2$ in the lungs.
