Pteridophytes are known as vascular cryptogams (Gk kryptos = hidden + gamos = wedded). The term pteridophytes has been derived from Greek word Pteron = feather. Thus, the name was orignally given to this group because of their pinnate or feather like fronds (leaves). They reproduce by spores rather than seeds. They are the first seedless vascular land plants:
