In pteridophytes, the prothallus is inconspicuous, small, multicellular, free-living, mostly photosynthetic, thalloid gametophyte which is produced by the germination of haploid spores. These gametophytes require cool, damp, shady places to grow, and bear antheridia, archegonia on their ventral surface.
