Structurally viruses are very diverse varying widely in size, shape and chemical composition. The nucleic acid of the virus (either DNA or RNA but not both) is always located within the virion particle and remains surrounded by a protein shell or sheath called capsid. Many animal viruses form an extra envelope around the capsid, rich in proteins, lipids and glycoprotein molecules.
