Q.
Propyne and propene can be distinguished by
IIT JEEIIT JEE 2000Hydrocarbons
Solution:
Terminal alkynes forms silver salt with Tollen's reagent while alkene does not react with Tollen's reagent.
$CH _{3}- C \equiv C - H + AgNO _{3} \xrightarrow{ NH _{3}(a q)} \underset{\text{white ppt} }{CH _{3}- C \equiv C Ag \downarrow}$
Therefore, Tollen's reagent can be used to distinguish a terminal alkyne like propyne from alkene as well as from internal alkynes.
