Solution:

(i) Aldehydes are easily oxidised to carboxylic acid by $HNO _{3}$ or $KMnO _{4}$ or $K _{2} Cr _{2} O _{7}$.
(ii) Alcohols are easily oxidised to carbonyl compounds first then to carboxylic acids.
