Q. Precipitate of $AgCl$ is soluble in liquid $ NH_3 $ , the compound forms
UPSEE
UPSEE 2009
A
$ Ag(NH_4)_2OH $
B
$ Ag(NH_4)_2Cl $
C
$ Ag(NH_3)_2OH $
D
$ Ag(NH_3)_2Cl $
Solution:
When liquid $NH _{3}$ is added to the precipitate of $AgCl$ , it dissolves due to the formation of a soluble complex diammine silver (I) chloride.
$AgCl +\underset{\text{liquid} NH_3}{2 NH _{4} OH} \rightarrow \underset{\text{diammine silver (I) chloride}}{[ Ag ( NH _{3})_{2}] Cl} +2 H _{2} O$
