Q. Potash alum dissolves in water to give a/an

ManipalManipal 2008

Solution:

$ K _{2}\left( SO _{4}\right) \cdot Al _{2}\left( SO _{4}\right)_{3} \cdot 24 H _{2} O $ gives
$ K _{2} SO _{4}+ Al _{2}\left( SO _{4}\right)_{3}+24 H _{2} O$
$ Al _{2}\left( SO _{4}\right)_{3}$ undergoes hydrolysis to give $ H _{2} SO _{4}$
$ Al _{2}\left( SO _{4}\right)_{3}+6 H _{2} O \longrightarrow 2 Al ( OH )_{3}+3 H _{2} SO _{4}$
due to which aqueous solution of potash alum is acidic.
