Q. Position of double bond in an organic compound is determined by

Hydrocarbons

Solution:

Ozonolysis is useful in locating the position of a double bond in an alkene. The double bond is obtained by joining the carbon atoms of the two carbonyl compounds.

For example,

Let the product of ozonolysis be two molecules of ethanal.

$CH _{3}- \overset{\underset{|}{H}}{C} = O + O = \overset{\underset{|}{H}}{C} - CH _{3} \longrightarrow CH _{3}- \underset{\text{2-Butene}}{CH = CH} - CH _{3}$
