Pollen grain has a outer covering called exine that is made up of a thick layer made up of sporopollenin. The exine is discontinuous in some regions where sporopollenin is absent. Also, sporopollenin is one of the most resistant known biological material. As a result, pollen grains can preserved as fossil.
