Jharkhand CECEJharkhand CECE 2004

Solution:

Plasmids are the extra-chromosomal genetic elements present in addition the normal DNA chromosomes in bacteria. Plasmids are intact, the circular pieces of DNA that have extra genes and are capable of autonomous replication in the cytoplasm of the bacterial cell. Different types of plasmids responsible for different functions occur in bacteria e.g., R plasmid (confer resistance to antibiotics, Colicins (responsible for formation of special proteins is E. coli) that kill closely related species of bacteria). Plasmid is the characteristic feature of only bacteria and is not found in alga, fungus or any other organism.
