Q. Phosphorous acid on heating gives the following products :
$4H_3PO_3 \xrightarrow{\Delta} 3H_3PO_4 +PH_3$
The above reaction is an example of

The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

$4H_3PO_3 \xrightarrow{\Delta}3H_3PO_4 +PH_3$
In the reaction, the acid in $+3$ oxidation state of $P$ tends to disproportionate to higher $(+5)$ and lower $(-3)$ oxidation state in $H_3PO_4$ and $PH_3$ respectively.
