Q. Phenol reacts with bromine in chloroform at low temperature to give

J & K CETJ & K CET 2010Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

In the presence of non-polar solvent like $CHCl_3$ and at low temperature, phenoxide ion is not generated. Now, it is the phenol that takes part in the electrophilic substitution reaction and gives a mixture of ortho and para bromophenol.
