Q. Phenol is less acidic than

AMUAMU 1999

Solution:

: $ -N{{O}_{2}} $ group is strongly electron withdrawing because it has both -I and -R effects. This group when present at ortho or para position with respect to the hydroxyl group, increases the acidity of phenol due to greater stabilization of the nitrophenoxide ion on account of resonance.
