Q. Phallomeres in male Periplaneta arise from

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020

Solution:

Three irregular shaped chitinous structures called “phallomeres” or “male gonapophyses” are associated with the male genital pore of the male cockroach. These phallomeres arise from the 9th sternum. Out of these three, left phallomere is the largest and is made up of a flat chitinous plate. It presents an opening called phallic aperture. It also bears a titilator (lobe with a hook), a pseudopenis (long with bulging tip), and acute & asperate lobe with spiny surface. The male genital pore is situated on the ventral phallomeres. The right phallomere presents two large hooks present at the apex and a hook present on the base of right phellomeres. The ventral phallomere is the smallest chitinous plate and that too without hooks. Hooks help in the opening of ootheca pore of the female cockroach.
