Q. $ P_4O_{10} $ dissolves in water to give

AMUAMU 2011The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

Phosphorus pentoxide, $P_4O_{10}$ has great affinity for water and gives orthophosphoric acid as final product.
It is therefore named phosphoric anhydride.
$P_4O_{14} \xrightarrow{2H_2O} \underset{\overset{\text{metaphosphoric}}{\text{acid}}}{4 HPO_3} \xrightarrow{2H_2O}$
$ \underset{\overset{\text{pyrophosphoric }}{\text{acid}}}{2 H_4P_2O_7} \xrightarrow{2H_2O} \underset{\text{orthophosphoric acid}}{4H_3PO_4}$
