Q. Oxidation states of the metal in the minerals haematite and magnetite respectively are

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

Iron is in +3 oxidation state in Haematite and +2 and +3 states in Magnetite.
Haematite: $Fe_{2}O_{3}:2x+3\times \left(\right.-2\left.\right)=0$
$x=3$
Magnetite: $Fe_{2}O_{4}$ [an equimolar mixture of FeO and $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ ]
$FeO$ : $x-2=0$
$x=2$
$Fe_{2}O_{3}$ : $x=3$
