Q. One mole of a monoatomic real gas satisfies the equation $p\left(V - b\right)=RT$ where b is a constant. The relationship of interatomic potential $V\left(\right.r\left.\right)$ and interatomic distance r for the gas is given by

Solution:

Here the given equation is $P\left(\right.V-b\left.\right)=RT$ .

On comparing with van der Waals' equation

$\left[P + \frac{a}{V^{2}}\right]\left[\right.V-b\left]\right.=RT$

That is $a=0$ .

It means only repulsive forces are present which are contributive only at very close distance so the potential energy will increase abruptly. i.e., graph C is correct.
