Phenol reacts with neutral $FeCl _{3}$ solution to give violet colour complex which is soluble in water.
$6 C _{6} H _{5} OH + FeCl _{3} \rightarrow \underset{\text{violet colour complex}}{\left[ Fe \left( OC _{6} H _{5}\right)_{6}\right]^{3-}} +3 H ^{+}+3 HCl$
