Solution:

In neutral aqueous medium, thiosulphate is oxidised almost quantitatively to sulphate: $8 \, \text{Mn} \text{O}_{4}^{-} + 3 \, \text{S}_{\text{2}} \text{O}_{3}^{2 -} + \text{H}_{\text{2}} \text{O} \rightarrow 8 \, \text{MnO}_{2} + 6 \, \text{SO}_{4}^{2 -} + 2 \text{OH}^{-}$ Solution
In $S_{2}O_{3}^{2 -}$ ,average oxidation number of Sulphur = $\frac{+ 6 - 2}{2}=+2$
