Q. On monochlorination of 2-methylbutane, the total number of compounds including stereo isomers formed are

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques

Solution:

Mono chlorination of 2-methylbutane gives four isomers (I, II, III, IV)

Solution Solution

Here only two, i.e., II and IV are optically active. Since each optically active compound has two enantiomers, therefore, in all there are four chiral compounds and two achiral compound (I, III) so total 6 compounds are possible.
