Q.
Observe the given boundary surface diagrams of two orbitals $I$ and $II$ and choose the correct option.
Structure of Atom
Solution:
Double dumbell-shaped lobes are present in the d-orbitals.
$d _{ z ^{2}}$-orbital has one lobe along z-axis and donut-shaped electron cloud perpendicular to it in xy plane
$d _{ xy }$ has two dumbell-shaped lobes in between the $x - y$ axis
$d _{ yz }$ has two dumbell-shaped lobes in between the $y - z$ axis
$d _{ zx }$ has two dumbell-shaped lobes in between the $z - x$ axis
$d _{ x ^{2}- y ^{2}}$ has two lobes along the $x$ and $y$-axis
In figure I, lobes are in between the $y-z$ axis and in figure II the two lobes along the $x$ and $y$-axis.
thus I is $d _{y z}$ and II is $d _{x^{2}-y^{2}}$.
