Nostoc is known to perform photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation simultaneously. Many species of Nostoc fix atmospheric nitrogen and thus, increase the soil fertility. Heterocysts ?the unique structure" of Nostoc filament function at sites for nitrogen fixation. In heterocysts, the free nitrogen $(N_2)$ of the air is converted into a form, usable by plants.
