Nessler's reagent $K _{2} HgI _{4}$ is used to detect the presence of $NH _{4}^{+}$. The given salt is warmed with small amount of $NaOH$. A gas is given out which gives a brown ppt. on the filter paper dipped in Nessler's reagent kept on its mouth.
