Muramic acid is present in the cell wall of bacteria. The bacterial cell wall is made up of a substance, unique to bacteria called peptide glycan or mucopeptide. In peptidoglycan molecules, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetyl muramic acid join each other by cross bridges of amino acids.
