Solution:

Let the number of goats and hens, be $x$ and $y$, respectively.
Given, $4 x+2 y=112$
$x+y=40$
Solving Eqs. (1) and (2), we get, $x=16$ and $y=24$
$\therefore$ Number of hens $=24$
